Biology
Studying A Level Biology allows you to develop your knowledge of living organisms and their interactions. You will consider how complex ecosystems can be supported to maintain biodiversity and begin to understand the complexities of inheritance and genetic advances in medicine. During the course you will complete a wide range of practicals with opportunities to travel to Hampton School to access their equipment.
Biology is a key requirement for medicine and a multitude of other courses such as pharmacology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, research science, microbiology, marine biology, conservation, and ecology, environmental management, food science, agricultural engineering and zoology.
Business
BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Business
This course supports progression to business related degrees, as well as apprenticeships or employment. You can go on to study degrees such as Business Administration, Management and Business Studies at universities such as Leeds, Liverpool, and Surrey.
This BTEC is an applied general qualification and is widely recognised by both industry and higher education. The content of the BTEC has been designed in collaboration with a range of employers and professional bodies and this ensures that your curriculum meets the needs of the sector.
BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business
The Extended Certificate is for learners who are interested in learning about the business sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in business-related subjects. It is designed to be taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels.
Chemistry
Studying chemistry allows you to understand what is happening in the world around you. Chemists are inquisitive and seek to understand and utilise Earth’s natural resources in the most effective and efficient ways possible. Studying chemistry gives you an excellent understanding of science and opens up a wealth of potential opportunities for further study or employment.
Chemistry is the subject you should study if you are interested in any of the following: materials science – could you design the next Kevlar?; pharmacology and drug design – could you invent the next wonder drug?; chemical engineering; medicine/veterinary science/dentistry.
Computer Science
English Literature
The English Literature A-Level course will develop your enjoyment of reading, teaching you to critically analyse texts, considering their contexts and possible meanings. As you progress through the course you will have the opportunity to explore a range of authors, genres, time periods and critical concepts. The NEA component will allow you to put the knowledge and skills you’ve gained into practice as you research and complete your own 2500-word comparative essay on texts and a topic of personal interest.
English Literature students will be expected to form and confidently share their own interpretations of the texts we read, as well as complete independent wider reading. English Literature is an A-Level extremely well-regarded by all universities and which will demonstrate that you are able to read widely and independently and develop your own interpretations of different texts.
Extended Project Qualification
EPQ is the Extended Project Qualification run by AQA. If you are interested in creating a project that explores a topic, question or problem that you are passionate about, then the EPQ is for you!
The EPQ is an opportunity to independently create, plan and manage a project that you want to find out more about. In the process you will be taught university-level research skills, get the chance to develop a professional relationship with a supervisor, and gain a qualification worth a whole AS level.
Previous, high-quality EPQs have addressed the influence of hip hop on gun crime in Chicago or whether new medical techniques can be used to edit the human genome. In some cases, EPQs have lowered University offers or provided crucial UCAS points for applications.
Your EPQ may inspire your post-sixth form choices as you research and write about a topic or problem that takes your interest. The academic writing and research skills you gain are useful for any University courses, and the EPQ qualification may supplement your A Level qualifications to help you secure an offer. Finally, your research for the EPQ will deepen your knowledge and give you concrete, relevant experiences to talk about during interviews after Sixth Form.
Economics
Studying Economics at Reach Academy presents a wonderful opportunity for students to understand the real issues of the way that markets work within the global world, and how this affects the choices that governments make in terms of monitoring and stimulating economic growth. They will have a particular insight into the way that the UK functions within this paradigm, especially the way in which the public make choices in terms of employment and purchasing power, which affect supply and demand.
By learning about the historical context of key figures such as John Maynard Keynes, Adam Smith, Friedrich and Marx, we ensure that students are well rounded Economists such that if they wish to pursue the subject at degree level they have a solid foundation for extended studies.
French
In French A Level you will study technological and social change, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. You will study highlights of French -speaking artistic culture, including francophone music and cinema, and learn about political engagement and who wields political power in the French -speaking world. You also explore the influence of the past on present-day French -speaking communities. Throughout your studies, you will learn the language in the context of French -speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. You will study a literary text and a film while also carrying out an independent research project on a topic of your choice.
French is favoured by universities and employers alike as the language proficiency acquired provides a strong foundation for university studies, and the cultural awareness fosters a global perspective. Many young people who study French go onto study languages, law, international relations, translation, diplomacy, tourism, business, and education, as it provides strong communication skills and cultural understanding.
Geography
Geography is the study of the world around us. It is a bridge between the STEM and essay subjects, with both human and physical geography studied in depth. You will have the opportunity to learn about a range of places and topics across the discipline. You will also be able to complete your own independent fieldwork on a topic that interests you!
With Geography A Level you could go on to study a wide range of degrees, in particular geography, economics,, biology, law, sociology, philosophy, ethics, marketing or journalism. History is also highly regarded by employers in industries including environmental science, climate modelling, international organisations, the media, accountancy, government, teaching, law and the civil service.
Health and Social Care
BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care
This qualification allows you to gain an in depth insight into the Health and Social Care sector. This is an applied qualification and is worth the equivalent of 3 A Levels. There is also an option to study for a one A Level equivalent.
This course supports progression to any health and social care related degree, a related apprenticeship or employment. You can go on to study degrees in Nursing, Midwifery, Social Policy and Health Studies at excellent universities such as Nottingham, Birmingham, Sheffield and Kings College London.
History
History is the study of past events. In History A Level you will learn about 2 periods of history in depth with one focusing on British history and the other focusing on world history. You will also have the opportunity to complete your own independent study of a period over 100 years. The study of history will not only inform you of past events but also help you understand why the world has developed in the way it has.
With History A Level you could go on to study a wide range of degrees, in particular politics, history, law, sociology, philosophy, ethics, advertising or journalism. History is also highly regarded by employers in industries including politics, international organisations, the media, accountancy, government, teaching, law and the civil service.
Maths / Further Maths
A Level Mathematics – Edexcel (9MA0)
An A Level in mathematics introduces calculus and its applications (statistics and mechanics). It emphasises how mathematical ideas are interconnected and how mathematics can be applied to model situations mathematically using algebra and other representations, to help make sense of data, to understand the physical world and to solve problems in a variety of contexts, including social sciences and business.
Maths A-Level prepares you to study for most degrees. Maths, accounting, engineering, sciences, computing, finance and economics degrees are particularly appealing to students with maths A-level.
A Level Further Mathematics – Edexcel (9FMA0)
An A-level in Further Mathematics builds on the knowledge gained in A-Level maths as well as some new concepts. In Core Pure there is a heavy emphasis on theoretical mathematics and proof. Students will be introduced to the concept of Complex Numbers, Polar Coordinates and Hyperbolic functions. They will learn how to perform calculations with matrices, solve differential equations and model real life situations using vectors.
For the Applied portion of Further Mathematics, students will study Decision 1 and 2. The courses are an introduction to discrete mathematics , a branch of mathematics that focuses on understanding and making optimal decisions by strategically using algorithms and models.
An A-level is Further Mathematics prepares learner for further study and employment in any field that requires a high level of mathematical understanding.
Physics
A-level Physics allows students to appreciate how fundamental science works and to study optional topics that particularly interest them – including Astrophysics, Medical Physics and Applied Physics. A-level Physics builds on the concepts and skills developed in the Physics GCSE and is particularly suitable for students who have the skills and knowledge associated with a GCSE Additional Science course or equivalent.
Physics is a seriously useful subject for the majority of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths)careers and you’ll find physicists everywhere, in industry, transport, government, universities, the armed forces, the secret service, games companies, research labs and more. Ultimately an A level in physics can take you anywhere; it shows that you are hard-working and logical with an ability to clearly understand and grapple with complex problems, inside and outside of physics.
Politics
Students will investigate in detail how people and politics interact. They will explore the emergence and development of the UK’s democratic system and the similarities, differences, connections and parallels between direct and indirect democracy. They will focus on the role and scope of political parties that are so central to contemporary politics, including the significance of the manifestos they publish at election time and their relevance to the mandate of the resulting government.
We live in a complex world with significant challenges, including global terrorism, poverty, economic instability, weapons proliferation, failing states and environmental degradation. These challenges require global co-operation if they are to be resolved. Global politics gives students an opportunity to develop an understanding of the local, national, international and global dimensions of political activity. It also gives them the opportunity to explore the political issues that affect all of us. Students will gain understanding of abstract political concepts through grounding them in contemporary real-world examples and case studies that will develop an international awareness and knowledge of multiple perspectives.
Psychology
If you are interested in understanding how people think, feel and behave then Psychology A Level is the course for you! Studying psychology provides an insight into human behaviour, giving you a better understanding of yourself and the individuals around you. Throughout your studies, you’ll explore many aspects of psychology such as social, cognitive and developmental psychology. You will also learn research techniques and how to conduct and evaluate an experiment.
This A Level is excellent preparation for a degree in Psychology, the sciences and social sciences. Psychology can also lead to a wide range of careers including Occupational, Clinical, Educational and Forensic Psychology. Having studied Psychology will also make you highly employable in many different industries due to its excellent transferrable skills and adaptability such as Medicine, Counselling, Teaching and Advertising.
Spanish
